Ian’s automated expertise sees firm land Queen’s award
1972: A HAWICK man, Mr Ian Blackie, has been responsible for the development of automated techniques at Ferranti Ltd, in Edinburgh.
This work has culminated in the company receiving the Queen’s Award to Industry for Technological Innovation; the only one in Scotland this year.
POLICE are investigating the theft of two antique cannons, valued at £200, from the front door of Branxholme Castle, the home of Dr and Mrs S. Brook. The weapons, which were made of iron and mounted on carriages, are about three feet in length and were reported missing on Tuesday.
1982: THE head-on collision between Roxburgh District Council and its staff, the majority of whom are NALGO members, shows no sign of an immediate truce.
The anger of union members flared after last week’s announcement that, following a private meeting of the council, five senior members of the staff were likely to be made redundant.
Monday’s meeting of the council was held as the entrance to the town hall was being picketed, and business was conducted under the watchful eyes of 20 council employees from different departments.
1992: POOR weather at the Common-Riding weekend and a £1,500 bad debt owed by the failed Country Caterers firm contributed to a £4,115 loss for this year’s festival, the Common-Riding General Committee has been told.
This year’s large deficit compares with a £498 loss last year and a £1,289 surplus in 1990.
THE continuing precarious state of the knitwear industry was underlined at the weekend when Dawson International, parent company of several local firms, announced the closure of its McGeorge Knitwear factory at Dumfries with the loss of up to 205 jobs.
2002: HAWICK folk will not be given the chance to elect their provost at the ballot box next year.
The Provost’s Council has decided by seven votes to three, in a secret ballot, against holding an election next May.
HAWICK has proven that it’s blooming marvellous after lifting its second trophy in as many months. The town beat off rivals Galashiels in this year’s Scottish Borders Floral Gateway competition.
TWO local entertainers were off to see the Queen recently.
