THE majority of ratepayers as well as the District and Regional Councillors who attended the Community Council public meeting in the Lesser Town Hall on Thursday night want to see the present top-heavy two-tier Council set-up reformed. Mr G. Brown, chairman, said he had received a written question which asked whether District Councils were unnecessary in view of the high administrative cost of running two authorities for an area as low in population as the Borders.

HEALTH care courses at Hawick’s Borders College building will be moved to Galashiels’ Heriot-Watt campus next year.

The move was confirmed by college principal Bob Murray, who said: “We are in discussion with Heriot-Watt to locate certain Higher Education courses including HNCs within the care department at Netherdale.

“The added value aspects of such a move would include access for students to high quality university library and other resources and facilities and the opportunity to experience studying in a university environment.

Local student Karen Wilson, who has been at the forefront of the fight to save the Commercial Road campus, said: “I really am beginning to think the worst and that a total move to Galashiels will happen despite massive support to retain the facility in Hawick.
