ALMOST a year since admitting he doubted whether he had a future in rugby, giant lock Scott MacLeod is on the cusp of the biggest game of his life.

Hawick rider Hilary Mactaggart made a victorious start to the show season when winning the ridden hunter championship at Sunday’s inaugural City of Edinburgh show.

LAST Thursday night saw the first of the Hawick club’s hilly series time-trials in which Kenny Darling tamed the tough Minto circuit in 27 minutes 10 seconds. Other times: D.Cavers 27:15; G. Jackson 30:39; C. Telfer 31:07; T. Harkness 32:04, P. Smith 32:07 and A. McKerrracher 33:42.

I THOUGHT the weather was taking a turn for the better last week but it really only lasted one day. The rise on Acreknowe was almost unbelievable, though, with trout showing everywhere, so it was out with the dry flies. I was just casting my team of two flies and letting them drift in the breeze and although the trout were running away with them they were difficult to hook due to the belly in the line.
