I KNEW Bill McLaren at school and remember him from sports days in particular, for he was two years younger than me, but much larger – and always known at school as 'Big Bill'.
We were in the same 'house' and eventually our house won the sports cup and the two of us had to go round the school, offering a drink to the masters. At first it was filled with soft drinks and no alcohol, but one of the masters said they would get us some cider for the rest of the way round, so much so that we eventually went off home somewhat inebriated to say the least. This was purely accidental though and down to the masters who bought the cider!
He was a good companion and a thoroughly nice person.
Even at school he was keeping notes on players and places – it was, of course, rugby, for any boy seen kicking a round ball was ostracized!
He had rare qualities and his impartial commentaries were always a pleasure.
